Oil Pan Leak
Fellow SVXers,
Time has come for me to remove my oil pan, cleaning everything and reinstalling it with a new gasket/sealer. I have yet to remove the oil pan, and I'd like to have everything ready. Do our cars have a gasket or do they use a high-temp sealant? If it's sealant, which one do you guys recommend? Thank you in advance, -Walter

Considering it is a 5mt I doubt he need worry of the auto oil pan.
The Eg33 takes a sealant not a gasket for the oil pan. Suggested to use Subaru triple bond... I think thats what it is called. I personally use Ultra Black sealant. The pan can be a bugger to get down esp if the dipstick is stuck well. Not to mention the very tight clearances for the rear bolts due to the subframe. When the pan is down... Carefully use a razor to remove all old sealant from the engine block. Then I suggest a wire wheel to remove the sealant from the pan itself and its grooves. Once all is cleaned up and there is nothing lingering in the bottom of the pan. Lay a thick bead, but not too thick, toward the inside edge of the pan. Replace the two O-rings on the dipstick tube and reinstall... Its not so bad but can be nerve racking and time consuming. Good luck Walter Tom |

Harvey, thanks for the reply, I guess it's my fault for not specifying the oil pan I was talking about. The Duc is good, still down in Miami (I moved to Atlanta for work 1.5 yrs ago). I am getting another set of cams installed then I'll bring her up here, hopefully in July!
Tom, thanks for the detailed answer. The Ultra Black sealant you use is the typical one from Permatex, correct? Thanks for the info, that's all I needed before jacking up the car and getting to work! -Walter

The Subaru techs at works use the Fuji triple bond sealant because they say once it's on it's like cement.
