exhaust question

okay I know that the exhaust system is already very well designed and it would be hard to improve upon but I was wondering what would happen (besides the fact that you would fail emissions test) if you took off all of the three cats and then made a completely separate "true" dual exhaust setup with two resonators & mufflers, let's say out of 2" piping would you lose the scavenge effect of the stock system, any possible gains from such a conversion???? thanks for any response

rumor has it

That there's not much resistance caused by the cats anyway. So, if you did take them all out, I'm not sure what you've gained. As far as the true dual setup, I think that may be something worth doing. From what I've hear, there is noticeable performance gained from that. You can ask 1994SubaruSVX for his input because he has a true dual setup. I'm aboot to mess with the cats cuz they're buzzing like mad. Midas said they're falling apart but that I don't need to worry about it because they aren't creating any backpressure. I'm not sure what I think about that diagnosis. So, that's my 2 cents.

Gid'ay, to answer your question. The catalytic converters don't cause much restriction to the flow. You could build a dual system, If the distance from the header flange to the resonators is kept the same as standard. I would keep the same size pipe, even though the pipe is carrying only 3 cylinders, the gas plug from the cylinder is the same size.

As far as a balance or crossover pipe is concerned, this is used to quieten the exhaust sound from the rear of the car. If you were standing at the back of the car with dual exhaust pipes, the sound would come from one pipe then the other pipe as pressure pulses. Put a pipe between the duals and now, from the back of the car, the sound pulse comes half from both pipes, to quieten the sound level. This pipe is not needed unless sound is too excessive. It should not be placed between the pipes, close to the header pipes as it will allow pressure from one bank of cylinders to affect the other side.

I don't think there would be an increase in power from the system, But it certainty would sound different, more of a BLAT,,,.BLAT sound. The problem would be in trying to fit it under the car.
Anyway thats the way I see it mate.
Harvey.
