Getting my valve covers changed
Well I finally decided to get my leaking valve covers changed. I called the local Subaru dealer for a price and was sort of surprised that in my opinion it was reasonable.
Labor $228 Parts $62 for valve cover gaskets and spark plug gaskets I should maybe have them do my spark plugs as well. It will be nice not to have to put oil in all the time! |

You're not to far from OT "SVXfiles", have you thought about going down there for the work? You'll probably get a better job done and last I heard, his rates were much lower than a dealership (too low in some opinions)

You are getting a GREAT deal, seriously i had my valve covers done about 3 years ago and it was about 500 - 600 bucks at a local import specialist! I most likely got overcharged, but I had no choice at that point.

makes sure they replace all 20 of the bolt washers... That is a low price for the gaskets and I am going to assume they did not include all the washers

It's not fair both Toms are on the east coast.
One or the other needs to move out here. Earl alone could give you enough business to make it worth while.

SVXfiles is about 140 miles from me. About $60 in gas and say 5 hours in drive time. I dont see it as being worth it to travel that distance for a job like this. Maybe for a really big project I would consider going there to save some money. Does OT do any and all kind of work on these cars? |

As far as I know, he does everything to SVX's.

140 miles, are you sure? A few weeks ago my car broke down in the South Hills, and I had it towed to OT. It was about 118 miles from there, and I probably could have had the driver shave a few miles off by not sticking exclusively to highways. That's a little further than I hoped. Even w/my 100 miles of free AAA towing, I had to pay over $50. Drive time for me is about 2 hours each way. That was late on a Sunday afternoon, and Tom got the job done that same evening, even scavenging some parts off one of the SVXen he had there! You're not going to get that kind of amazing service anywhere else! Even at my local family mechanic's, my car would have been out of service for at least half a week.

There are a total of 28 gaskets which include the 6 valve cover gaskets, 20 washers and 2
oil seperator gaskets which you might as well do these with the other ones. My discont price was around $100 for all the gaskets so either your getting a hell of a deal on parts or the guys skimping out on parts which could make you unhappy when they leak again very soon. Quote:
