SVX Prices Today
I recently picked up the Dec 2006 issue of "Old Cars Price Guide", which covers 1930 thru 1999 vehicles. Obviously I checked on the SVX's prices - this is a well respected publication as a guide to a vehicle's value. VERY interesting prices for the SVX, as noted below (all of these quoted prices below are for a "#1, pristine, excellent, restored to current maximum professional standards of quality in every area, or perfect original with components operating and appearing as new - a 95 point show car that is not driven"and a # 6, Parts Car (for a LSi model only unless otherwise stated):
1992 - #1: $17,000 - #6: $680 1993 (LSL) I was not aware of this model designation before seeing it here. - #1: $14,800 - #6: $590 1994 - #1: $11,000 - #6: $440 1995 - #1: $11,000 - #6: $440 1996 - #1: $11,000 - #6: $440 1997 - #1: $13,000 - #6: $520 The most interesting thing about the guide is that the '92 is apparently worth more than the '97. Thoughts, anyone? Harry

Harry,
Two thoughts... 1. I should start looking for a pristine '92, and 2. Maybe finding a $400-600 '92 to use as a stripped down race car is possible -Bill

I thought in 92 that there wasn't LSi...that they were all LSL's...

OK, Harry, here's a deal you can't refuse. I'll swap you my semi-pristine '92 for your auto-crossed abused '97. What are friends for?
Ron (hurry before I re-consider this generous offer).

In my biased opinion I'd rate my car at a solid 2.5, as there IS some wear on the brake pedal, & probably a moth or two mangled in the radiator. This puts the value at about $9,700, but you can steal it for only $8,999!!! Limited offer - value increasing daily. Ron (cash preferred).

Harry,
Your figures are certainly interesting, but appear to relate to what would be collectors items and are therefore difficult to relate to the norm. I can not see a 1992 having a premium down here. The SVX is not rated as collectable and even if it were the prices quoted appears steep if related on present rates of exchange. In respect of a daily driver, age and mileage is the deciding factor here. What is more the cost of fuel has of late depreciated anything over two litres in engine capacity. The going rate for a parts car here is $500 or less, regardless of make/model. A roadworthy warranted and registered hack, say $1,200. A nice reliable runner, $4,000. As an indication, I have just purchased a absolutely mint, top of the range, 1997 Mazda MX5 Roadster, 104,000 kms, for $8,400. One NZ owner before me and imported ex Japan 3 yrs ago. Currently NZ$1 buys US$0.6656. To be properly practically relative, earning capacity is the key in respect of the two markets and should be built into the equation. Regards, Trevor.

I totally agree, Trevor. And I don't think these figures are very much off from your assessment in NZ. $600 or $500 for a "parts car" is about the same. And of course, as with NZ, where in the country one finds a SVX will all be a determining factor. A large city would perhaps warrant more money than a very small town in the country. The ole supply and demand thing.
The interesting thing to me from this price guide was that a prestine '92 is worth more than a pristine '97. One would think it would be reversed - last year, fewer imported, etc (and trans fixed). But it is interesting to compare different countries on the same car. But as you imply, so many factors to consider .... And no, the SVX is not yet a collectable car in the sense a Mercedes 300 SL Gull Wing is, but who knows - one of these days!! Harry
