Manual to automatic safety belts conversion
I really like automatic belts, but my 95 Lsi have manual, and i thought that it will be cool to install automatic belts, anybody done it?
As i know, i need: 1. rails with motor assy - i think technological holes in the body the same with 92-93, 94-97, right? So there is no problem to install rails 2. The same with additional manual belt 3. Belts control module 4. Trim panels - it must have space for rails, right? Is this panel available in beige color? (edited - yes, http://www.subarusvx.com/images/carp...nterior047.jpg ) 5. Door handles 6. The main problem - wiring. If 95 wiring has connectors, its not a problem 7. Stopping sensors (to check open belt position) This question goes to someone, who own many svx`s or someone, who parted a lot of them. Or someone, who did replacement already Thanks !

Re: Manual to automatic safety belts conversion
That is the first time I have heard anyone wanting to convert to auto seatbelts.

Re: Manual to automatic safety belts conversion
It will be tricky. The body harness is completely different as they relocated different modules throughout the car with the addition of the 2nd air bag and elimination of the auto belts. Technically, you would need both auto belts, both A-B pillar trim pieces. Auto belt "Oh Sh!t" handle bracket. You could power them by running your own fused and relayed wiring. The trickiest part in making them work as they normally do would be wiring in the auto belt module and having it get the signal for the doors opening and closing.

Re: Manual to automatic safety belts conversion
Not so difficult as look for the first time.. If i can find full wiring diagram for automatic seatbelt system, it will be easy. You`re right, i can power them by my own wiring and just add door latch switch and limit switch, then connect it with power wiring to control module..
Cool) Whats the price for used components, anyone have it?

They are result of an overreaching regulation in the US (no other countries the SVX was in had them). It's a passive restraint system that is today just problematic. They are not original; It's an afterthought to meet US car safely regulations. I remember back in 1991, 1992 new Ferrari owners would spend thousands to loose the passive belts in F40s and Testarossas. Also, don't forget the additional lap belt that needs to be manually pulled across. Because of this the seats have brackets and guides that are not found on the standard car as well as a different mounting point for the manual lap belt. It may be a different seat all together, I'm not sure. Why anyone would want to spend an huge amount of time and money to equip a car with clunky outdated government mandated passive safety belts is beyond me. Spend your efforts on keeping the car original and running! |

Re: Manual to automatic safety belts conversion
Its easier to buy `92-93 than do a conversion)
so dont worry, it will keep its safety system original

"Also, don't forget the additional lap belt that needs to be manually pulled across." I suppose that would be true with any setup... "clip it or ticket" The shoulder belt is, of course, automatic. The lap-belt is the smoothest and easiest to fasten... by a mile! I used to marvel at how easy it was to fasten the lap belt, compared to those other cars, but as I thought about it the reason was simple. With other cars you have to drag both the shoulder belt and the lap belt together, but with the SVX, just the lap belt. We travel a lot and rent cars and fastening the seat belts in anything else is a project because we are so spoiled from the SVX! If you by chance do forget the lap belt, you will probably avoid a ticket with the automatic shoulder belt and still have some protection in case of an accident. For safty, the wife and I constantly check with each other... "is your lap belt fastened?" +1 for the system! Keith |
