Dyno testing

Anybody have access to an dyno? No offense, but some of you are spending $$$ on aftermarket exhaust, intake stuff, etc etc etc, and having already been involved with one car's aftermarket (Neon) I can tell you that not all the products give you the 'gains' they advertise. Yeah, there are a few products that significantly give you a gain in hp or torque, but there are some that make you LOSE hp and torque. Hell, look at the new issue of SCC and how they 'tuned' the new 350Z. They bolted on some mandrel bent performance exhaust system and LOST power. :\

I don't think I'd shell out $$$ on parts unless I KNEW they gave me more power.

Anyone?

I think we all know about the "claimed" information on the gain in HP. But on a brighter note, I believe I can get access to a dyno.

Cool stuff!

irish mikes here in orlando i have known for a while very very cool people helped me tune my dsm for me..also titan motorsports here wich is mainly supra guys has one also.. every big town should have dynoes

as for gains in power there so amy variations. its hard what to believe these days.. exhaust size is important for a n.a car. u dont want too much pressure and also u dont want it to free flow. so its tricky.

also hp difrences in weather also and height above sea level. doesnt make too much of a difrence for n.a cars turbso temprature is amplified.

i beleive intake//exhaust under drive pulleys is teh 3 best simple and easiest thing for a svx.

A lot of places have dynos. However not a lot have AWD dynos. There's the rub.

thats true randy i forgot to put that in => most of them are for FWD or rwd cars but there are some far and few between for AWD

most of the AWD guys,,,wrxs..3000gts..eclipses..audis they normally disonect the rear driveshaft..

for our case where lucky we can change it to FWD mode, =>

solar, you want to explain to me how you got 370hp out of a t28/28? A big 16g wont even make that to the wheels....or are you just guessing at a the crank? My small unported unclipped 16g'd GST @16 psi made 275 to the ground....

I have been completely buggered up when setting up racing cars through using chassis dyno's. When making comparisons it is essential to use the same machine as calibrated figures are miles out. Even when doing this operator error can and does balls things up. After all their only interest is to make money as quickly as possible .

The best dyno is a stop watch and a suitable marked length of road but care and consistancy must prevail. A slightly up hill stretch can be an advantage.

Ca$h what you are saying is right on the button. People who spend money on something, or time installing it, or having read all the hype by the PR guys, will always PERCEIVE there is an improvement . The trouble is they are not likely to pursue the truth based on fact.

Exclamation Are you sure?

Are you sure you guys can't get on a 2WD dyno? I'd figure since an older modelled auto XT6 and my 1997 Outback Sport has a fuse that you can put in to convert the car to FWD configuration, that you'd be able to do the same on the SVX. Look in the engine compartment (probably passenger side near firewall) for a FWD fuse. I'd be puzzled if the SVX didn't have it.

Also, I dyno'd my Outback Sport using the fuse (it's autotranny/awd) and I had no problems.

Mraz automotive in Milwaukee has a four wheel dyno.

Perhaps someone can clarify, since I've never had to have my car inspected on a dyno, but, enough DMV's consider the use of a two wheel dyno on an AWD car to be "iffy" enough so as to issue an exemption. Can anyone else confirm this? This seems to be what I've gathered from my three years of info on this and the Yahoo boards.

One thig about AWD dynos; they're rare. UPRD had one here in LA before, and I was talking to one of the guys there. He was explaining that it was a one- or two-million dollar machine, and that while everyone wants to use an AWD dyno, no one is willing to pay for it (I remember something like $500/hr or session, or run). He said it was something nice to brag about, but wasn't economically profitable.

They issue exemptions/'refuse to bother' here also. Basically they aren't really there to check anything in the first place, they're there to collect revenues. (The new OBDll std. where they only hook up to the diagnostic link in the car to check it is a total farce. We get many cars with failure codes that can either pass or fail emissions standards. It's just easier and faster for them to take the money and run. Must also explain why they're abandoning the program next fall...)

Why risk a car owner screaming for a new tranny? That would take a lot of $11 inspections to recoup the cost of an SVX transmission.

No 4wd dynos!!!!!!!!!

It was the lack of 4wd dynos back in 91, that saw the US get a compromise AWD section in the first place.

If they were available back then, you would have the center diff AWD, like the rest of the world.

Harvey.
