tranny or diffy
Hey Guys
I was running on the eway and suddenly the car just stopped. i thought it was my brakes locking or something. I tried going reverse and forward to get to an exit and the car ran and eventually locked. Is this the tranny dead? or is it the diffy? i checked the tranny fluid and it was smelling burnt. and this happened suddenly.... im at a loss on how. only thing i changed was tire pressure. its been getting cooler in chicago... |

Re: tranny or diffy
With my transmission problems it certainly didn't lock. Just the opposite. Free revs & no momentum.

Re: tranny or diffy
sounds like the diff... Drain the front diff fluid and see what surprises come out

Re: tranny or diffy
Hmm... so there is no such hitng as alocki out tranny?
i did observe as i was driving it first started to "trip" before the lockout. i remember that i could still feel the power bite but like the car was in "parK" What causes this? I will drain the fluid. The mechanics are telling me that its the rear diffy but somehow i doubt it. i have faith in this forum. Never been wrong thanks! |

Re: tranny or diffy
i read more of past posts and Convinced its the front diffy.
I am going to drain the fluid on both to check. I have a few Tech Questions: 1) Where exactly is the front diff? a) Engine - Tranny - Diff - Driveshaft b) Engine - Diff - Tranny - driveshaft 2) Is the diffy where the axels are attatched? 3) Is it cheaper to change the whole tranny than just the diffy? 4) Is there other ways to check which components are damaged? |

Quote:
1) Option B 2) Yes 3) Depends on who is going to assemble it and how much they will charge 4) Take it all apart... otherwise just try to check whether it is the front wheels or bakc wheels locking up Tom |

Re: tranny or diffy
Okay.
To troubleshoot here is my strategy. Jackstand the cars. remove drive shaft turn wheels by hand. If the front or rear wheel does not turn, then I can conclude its that differential. How hard is it to remove the driveshaft? is this a sound experiment? Thanks!!! |

Re: tranny or diffy
it is relatively simple to unbolt the driveshaft from the rear diff... No need to drop the whole thing.
