97 Impreza 2.2l tranny, will it work?
Hey Guys,
I'm talking svxfiles parts guy and he has the 97 impreza 2.2l outback transmissions. Can we use those for our svx's? What gear ratio are they?

Yes, it will work - the gear ratios are 4.11.
My former 4.11 trans was from a 2.2L '96 Impreza Outback Sport. You'll need a rear diff from a 4.11 Legacy though - the ones from the Impreza are tiny and won't match up to our axles or accomodate the limited-slip hub. -Chike

What other parts have to change?

I think the only other thing you need are the seals, screen filter, and pan gasket, as well as gear oil for the rear diff

No, I put a 98 Impreza tranny in a 92 SVX. Works flawless. |

It would match up, but with the svx, for a good investment, id be getting some heavy duty sti gears. I've got a legacy manual and after about 30k miles on it the teeth are really singing. Also every time you lay into the pedal your putting a lot of stress on the gear teeth getting this big car moving warping or sharpening the teeth, making them weaker until they wear down or shear off.

Tim,
Been thinking about your post, if the tranny died because of the diff, no issues, but if it died due to failure of internal clutches you might want to get the torque converter to a shop for a rebuild/flush action - I think that will add about $150 to the job, but give you that much piece of mind. If there's no way financially, I'd run it a few miles with cheap ATF, then drop the pan, change the filter, etc. again. |

Hey Chike,
I picked up a 99 imprezza diff with 4.11's in it. it had the bolt on sides for the carrier bearings. This does mean it is a lsd right?? Or am I going to need to swap my carrier?? Tom |

I don't think the Impreza's had LSD until 2000.

It did have the bolt on sides though, I thought this was an indicator

the bolts on the sides are just an indicator that the diff will accept our axles. Earthworm is right, only the '00+ Imprezas had the limited-slip. -Chike
