Oil motor ?
Hi, you put what type of oil motor in your engine ?
The white oil, Spheretech 0W40 seems good for my SVX... Thanks. Pierre-Olivier Last edited by Pierre-Olivier; 10-28-2009 at 01:40 AM. |

Re: Oil motor ?
That is a bad idea. Probably be fine when the engine is warm but 0w when it's cold is too thin for this engine, the owners manual cautions aginst 5/30 and 0w-40 is even thinner than that at 0 degrees c.

Re: Oil motor ?
I don't see a problem with it.
The manual cautions against sustained high speed driving using 5-30W. This is because it needs 40W at higher temperatures, particularly sustained high temperatures from high speed driving. This 0-40W oil has higher specifications than the recommended grades from the '92 manual. It should be better for economy because of the low viscosity when cold and still provide high temperature protection. If you wanted to be slavish on the manual recommendation then 5W-40W is probably the Holy Grail. Spheretech is only available in 0-40W I think, but I would not be afraid of using it. Joe

Re: Oil motor ?
The only things I have against 0W oil in an older engine are A) More leaks since it seeps thru finer gaps, and B) Oil burnoff in the combustion chamber. The 0W base oil is only enhanced to 40W thermal protection thru additives, which degrade over time, so I just wouldnt trust putting this stuff in my engine unless I had no other alternative.

Re: Oil motor ?
hell you would be fine with 5/30 all year around unless you have leaks already, then i'd stick with 10/30 in the summer and 5/30 in the winter. i put valvoline max life in my subi and a pureolator filter. it just purrs on the highway

Re: Oil motor ?
Just put 10/30 in it like it says. 5/30 if it's winter and the temps are consistently below 0c.

Re: Oil motor ?
Hi everyone ,Subaru says to use 10W-30 unless your temps go below zero. Then use 5W-30. I would think also if you live where the temps are over 100 degrees I would go to 10W-40 for that period of the year when the temps are high. Take care, BOBB
