Twin turbo TD04-13T project: Journey to 300+whp
This thread will be dedicated to my EG33 swapped 01 legacy, with the goal of 300-350whp through a phase 2 4eat. In addition to this thread, you can follow me on rs25.com "link" OR over on www.youtube.com/subimodz . I'll be updating both places but I don't journey here as often as rs or youtube for my updates.
Things I have: Spare eg33 Spare exh headers TD04-13T Things I need: One TD04-13T's AEM Fic6 (got a quote, just needs ordered) Walbro 225 (quoted, needs ordered) 420cc oem WRX injectors (8 for 180$ shipped) I'm also going to be getting an ST coilover set here soon, so the turbo build will be a slow gathering of parts as $$$ becomes available. I'm also going to get my ass in school, so funds will be limited but, this build wont be like others. I'm not going to make a thread and update it for 10yrs. ****s gonna get real, really real. Re: Twin turbo TD04-13T project: Journey to 300+whp
My overall plan for where and how to mount the turbos are as follows.
2 turbos, either mounted directly to, or just off of each exhaust header. Twin front mounted intercoolers to a normally mounted intake manifold. If I get myself aluminum welding gear I'll flip the intake manifold. I'll be dropping my radiator about 2 inches to make room for the intake tubes. I also need to plate off the radiator cap and install a steel bracket to the OE rad crossmember. |

Just confirming, you ARE planning on doing full internals, correct?

How about oil return? The manifold exits are very low, much lower than the oil level in the pan.

nope. 8psi to start and sate my appetite as I rebuild my spare block with Manley hrods. stock, shaved pistons and cams. :-)

Re: Twin turbo TD04-13T project: Journey to 300+whp
How about positioning one where mine is and the other where the battery is located? See the link posted by "E" on the EZ30R thread.
The turbos you are looking at are small and the plumbing for one bank only would a breeze compared to mine. If you keep the boost level down you might first try it w/o intercoolers and see where you are. When I find the time I will make an effort to measure the compressor inlet and discharge temperatures on mine. My guess is that at 5 PSI an IC would not gain much - especially mid range. /T |

Re: Twin turbo TD04-13T project: Journey to 300+whp
I was just double checking for your 300whp goal. Because you will blow ringlands as you approach that number on a stock engine. That's all

Re: Twin turbo TD04-13T project: Journey to 300+whp
the spare engines rings will be either replaced or gapped if compression is serviceable.

Re: Twin turbo TD04-13T project: Journey to 300+whp
You can't stay with stock pistons to reach what you are trying for. The stock pistons are much weaker than the stock rods, and it is a waste of money to upgrade the rods and stay with the stock cast pistons. You could use stock rods and forged pistons, or upgrade both, but the pistons are the weak point in almost every Subaru motor ever built when you add boost.

Re: Twin turbo TD04-13T project: Journey to 300+whp
It doesn't matter if you replace the rings. It's the lands that fail, aka the pistons...

Seems most turbo builds I've read used the stock pistons with upgraded rods. Either the pistons are shaved or the rings are gaped (or both). In any case, my current engine isn't going to be used to reach my 300whp goal. It's just getting a bit of FI at a safe level. It seems bazza (and many other turbo eg33 builds) would say otherwise about the pistons. I've come across quite a few FI builds where they've used the stock pistons and upgraded the C-rods.
