oil gallery plugs
I am retrfitting a 3.3 into a car project and would like to improve ground clearance by modifying the oil pan to possibly dry sump. Just ahead of the oil pan are two plugs of slightly different size that appear to be on two oil galleries. Are these gallerys the pressure and return sides of the pump? Could a person tap into these to connect an oil cooler or possibly a dry sump system? I have read a lot on this forum but have not seen the outline of a dry sump system on a 3.3.

Re: oil gallery plugs
If you are talking about the plugs that have a hex drive in them, located on the front and rear sides of the block, then no. Those are for removing/installing the wrist pins into the connecting rods and pistons. If those are not the plugs you are talking about, then I apologize for the waste of a post.
Pics?

Re: oil gallery plugs
Cam,
Thanks for your reply but the ones I am refering to are cap screw/socket heads not hex. I should have posted pics in the first place. Good suggestion. They are directly in front of the front lip of the oil pan. Hope the pic helps. Mike |

Re: oil gallery plugs
Those feed directly into the oil pump. I assume you could probably tap a gauge in there for oil pressure, it would seem logical. I think I read that someone tapped into the oil pressure sensor location as well. Not sure, though. Did you try a search?
Edit : Permacool makes an adapter plate with send/return fittings you can put between your block and oil filter. It is for an oil cooler, but you may be able to utilize it for a gauge set up.

Re: oil gallery plugs
Cam,
I wasn't so concerned about a place to tap in a gauge, I was more curious about a place to tap in an auxilery oil tank and cut down most of the oil pan for ground clearance. Has anyone tried that? Mike |

If I were you I would PM boxersix. He is very knowledgeable on drysump systems.
