cooler/filter install
is it a real PITA to install a tranny cooler/ ext. filter or pretty straightforward? any how-to's on this? also, does the Subaru filter kit use "special" ($$$) filters, or are they cheap. i was thinking about a universal filter kit from Summit Racing that just uses a regular oil filter. thanks for any help!
Alan

I didn't install my cooler, so, I can't help you there. I believe "nubs" is pretty much the filter/cooler guru here. You might PM him for some advice.

I didn't install my cooler either, but I did install my canister type filter though. It was $35.00 or so, and had a hole for a temperature sending unit. It is a Therma Cool brand. I added a temperature gauge while I was at it, and it has been very interesting to see what the temps are in different situations. The filter that goes in it can be replaced with a $4.00 Fram filter.

where didja get that Therma-cool filter kit? i think the one i was looking at was Summit Racing's brand. no mention of a hole for a sending unit, though. i'm planning on putting in a digital temp gauge with a nice green display to match the interior instrument lights. let me know, please. i need to order this stuff soon!
thanks, Alan

Oooops - the brand is Perma Cool. The link for the information is http://www.Permacool.com/Catalog/Cat_page25.html
The link for parts suppliers is http://www.perma-cool.com/Links.html The digital temp gauge link is at http://www.dakotadigital.com/Detail....umber=ODY-08-3 This is what I installed, and it works great. There are pictures in my locker of the temp gauge. Hope this helps out.

My spin on filter kit was from Summit, and had the temp gauge hole cast in. I am very certain that the Summit and Perma Cool ones are made in the same place, as they look identical...
Also I have a Autometer tranny temp gauge #2640 (I think) which comes with a green bulb cover so it fits right in with the standard gauges.

actually, i found the Perma-cool filter kit in the Summit catalog. i'm going with a green digital temp gauge.
i found a temp gauge in the Summit catalog with a programmable output - could be used to turn on a fan at a preset temp. pretty cool, but i have enough wiring to do to the car. Alan
