Amazing Bodywork!

Re: Amazing Bodywork!
That is insane! What was that guy using to do that? It almost looked like that expanding foam stuff you get to fill holes to keep the house from leaking. That can't be what it was, though. It definately does not look like fiberglass. If whatever that guy is using is cheap, strong, and readily available, I may have found a way to address the issues I have with the center console.

Re: Amazing Bodywork!
The interior is what blew me away. I would have gone another way with the design, but the outcome is very clean. Impressive to say the least.
I almost didn't make it past this pic. Glad I made it to the bottom.

Interesting placement for a Maybach Exelero Grille.

Pretty much the same stuff. Not really a good choice of materials, that car won't exist in 10 years.

Re: Amazing Bodywork!
That is one way to make a car disposeable, and un-repairable. Not to mention ugly.

Re: Amazing Bodywork!
It isn't too much different than some of Ed Roth's work and the others like him at the time, which I blame acid for their designs. They built a lot of cars with plywood, conduit and foam covered in fiberglass. Most of these cars are long gone.

Re: Amazing Bodywork!
I figure that it'll outlive the euro-electronics in the Benz no problem. If you find me a car at a dealership with a ten year lifespan I'll be impressed. This guy just has the same disposable attitude toward cars as the major manufacturers. Prius batteries, BMW drive-by-wire, VVT, etc. These things don't have any greater life expectancy than PU-foam. At least the center console will survive (wood block).
Besides, Ed Roth cars that have actually survived in garages are just as cool today as when he built them decades ago. Not a daily driver by any stretch, but just as cool to me as a concourse car with no miles on it.

Re: Amazing Bodywork!
Some are cool, some are just a product of way too many acid trips. He built some nice simple cars, I remember a really nice Model A Tudor Sedan that was full fendered, I like that one a lot. As far as his wild show cars, I do wish Mysterion survived, I do like that one. The first Beatnik Bandit was nice, along with Outlaw. I didn't care for the Druid Princess, Orbitron or Road Agent very much. I really didn't care for any of his bikes or trikes, they were just too useless.

Re: Amazing Bodywork!
A few years ago I actually bought (and still have) a magazine with the Excelero on the cover just because I thought the grille looked so cool and would look cool scaled down as a hot rod grill, no other reason. This russian must have bought the same magazine.

Re: Amazing Bodywork!
And from the video it seems like there should be a way to make a foam suitable for life in a car interior. Doing it cheaply without already owning any of the equipment, that would be a bit harder.

Re: Amazing Bodywork!
The foam is most probably (by the looks and the 2k mix) a urethane. Definitely more durable than the 1k spray foam...
Still, don't know about life expectancy, but I bet the bigger issue is keeping the paint flexible enough to not crack out. |
