I think the Subaru Manual Tranny's will hold up much better than the Autos do, plus they're cheaper & easier to come by, if they do go bad.
As for the short throw shifter, I Modified a stock Impreza Shifter for my SVX by lengthening the rods, so one of the aftermarket Impreza shifters could be modified the same way.
