jusst an idea

I know that motorcycles and buggies have used bicycle computers (which are programmable) for use as speedos. If you are tech savvy enough you can use one to replace the vss and restore speedo action, solving your issue. with a little research you couuld have things strait for under a bill.

also, the output of the bike computer is a square wave form and would need to be converted to whatever the output of the vss is.
