We have a Japanese SVX (Alcyone Type L). A lot of UK dealers buy cheap used cars from Japan and import them to the UK where they can sell them for a tidy profit.
As far as I know, all Alcyone's have a power mode button. UK SVX's on the other hand are the opposite. They are permanently in power mode unless you press the "economy mode" button.
I don't think 249SVX's manual button is broken. He says:

I think he is correct: If the stick is in position 1, the car will only use 1st gear regardless of the Manual button.

Jamsvx did some research on the numbers sold in the UK. I think the figure came out at 259. I can confirm that UK and Japanese SVXs suffer all the same problems as the US models. Tranny, Wheel Bearings, Taillight Condensation etc.
