If you push the manual button and you can still take off in first gear, then, I'm afraid your Manual button is faulty, unless, of course, you drop it "Manually" into first, which defeats the purpose of the Manual button. You can go through the gears "manually" with the shift lever with or without the manual button being pushed in. And, no, it isn't recommended -- that's why they're called "Automatics."
