UPDATE: The VSS2 is rather easily accessed from the top of the car (passenger fender side) and only requires removing the wiring pigtail (and
THAT'S a fun job since it is very hard to see it while your left hand is down there) and the sensor itself with a 17mm open end wrench.
My VSS2 was in about 5 parts: the sensor body, the shaft itself, which was broken in two pieces & was loose (with twisted metal on the tip, almost 3 full turns!), the rubber ring & the metal ring had come apart, and there were a couple small shreds of rubber sliced off as well. When insterting the shaft back into the sensor it was as if the part that actually rotates within the body had frozen. Interesting since there is ATF present which one would hope acts as a lube.
Make sure you get all the sensor pieces out before threading in the new one. I used a small magnet and part of a paper towel.
Car came right up with no CEL and speedo & odo worked right away.
Cheers!
