If your speedometer and odometer do not work, it is either VSS2 or the plastic gears inside the differential. If the speedometer quit or reads "off", but the odometer reads proper (1mi=1mi) then your cluster is bad.
VSS1 is the sensor on the back of the trans which helps the TCU decide how much power to send to the rear. This does not affect the speedometer or odometer.

Driving with a failed VSS2 will not harm the car in any way.

There is no speedometer cable on an SVX.
