Subaru retrofitted an external ATF filter, not cooler. It's inside the frame directly beneath the battery; the canister looks just like a fuel filter. Can't miss it.
You'll know if the rear wheel bearings are going. Mine sounded like a 55-gallon drum half-filled with marbles rolling down the road.
