What bad things would happen to me if I were to sand the remaining clearcoat off to get a consistant look? The rest of the car looks good but the wheels are "trashing" it up.

Be careful doing this Randy. I buffed mine with very fine grade steel wool, principally to get rid of petrol/brake dust marks, and some bitumen marks. Ended up with a total hotchpotch colour scheme. The steel wool wears off the clearcoat, and the top of the metallic finish, underneath is flat and dull undercoat in grey.

It does not bother me too much, as I intend having my four wheels redone, sanded completely, trued up, and resprayed with original dark silver. But over-eager with the steel wool or fine sandpaper will leave a mottled look.
