The clearcoat os coming off of my original wheels. Since I'm a cheap SOB and son't want to spend hundreds of $$, what are inexpensive solutions?

What bad things would happen to me if I were to sand the remaining clearcoat off to get a consistant look? The rest of the car looks good but the wheels are "trashing" it up.
