This is the way I autocross - put it in 1st and leave it. If the straights are so long as the speed is such that the rev-limiter tells the tranny to shift, it happens. When revs get low enough, the tranny will downshift back to 1st (sometimes I do have to "play with the throttle" to get it to downshift in a timely manner). Hard on the trans? Yep, no doubt. But it works just fine.
If you are interested, I will send you a videopretty large file - I have it in my locker, but can't bring it up for some reason) of me running (two runs from different angles) autocross in May that RUFUS took (great job videoing too!). In one run you can very clearly hear the upshift and downshift - and yes, that engine is humm'ing! This was a fast course (meaning somewhat long straights). With most autocross courses the car never gets out of 1st gear.
