If I remember correctly, the SVX transmission is beefed up by using 5 sets of planetaries instead of just 4 which is what other Subie phase1 transmissions use. Someone would have to confirm that as I can't say it as fact... In any case, the SVX transmission was definitely built stronger.
Clutch plates yes. 4 ratios requires only 2 planetaries. The SVX has 5 as i recall, and there is one less as they go to smaller motors i.e I believe there are 4 clutch plates in a not SVX trans (2.2l) 3 in a 1.8 impreza which is a pretty rare unit, and I don't know about the old ones that were in the XT6. I think the turbo legacy also had 5, just like ours.

Someone correct me if memory fails?
