Well mine blew the pinion bearing and sounded the same way. When it happend to me there was nothing in the diff housing but the smell of burnt gear oil. Check for the diff oil level, if there is nothing on it chances are thats your problem. When the pinion seal go's bad is throws all the gear oil in to the tranny, you might also notice that the tranny fluid is really nasty looking now too.

Depending on how well the tranny was shifting prior to this, it might be time for a rebuild or 5 speed swap. I'm in the process of changing the gears on my old box right now. Witch remindes me.
