If its the pinion/ring gear wearing, then there should be metal in the gear oil. A couple ways (at least) to test for this.

1) drain the fluid and use any old magnet to check & see if there's metal in it.

2) find a magnet small enough to be inserted in the dip stick hole...maybe one of those magnets on an extend-able shaft, or a small ring shaped one and tie a string to it, or (...you get the idea) and let it down in the differential far enough until it rests on the bottom. Let it sit a minute and pull it out, should find metal.
