flex plate
I finally had the problem fixed. kuoh was on the right track, it was the flex plate. It was the same problem htownsvx had. The flex plate was cracked all around the bolts. Because the plate was cracked, it was spinning wrong and rubbing and banging against it's surroundings (sorry I wasn't able to record the sound). The trans had to be removed to replace the part. It cost me over 450 dollars! ouch! I've included a photo for your viewing of the cracked flex plate.
