Trust me, I've tried many variations and this is the only method that works for my SVX once it's in that condition. If you let go of the gas as soon as it catches, the RPMs won't rise above 2k, pretty much the same as if it started normally. In my case, I'm leaning toward some leaky injectors being the cause, since it only happens after the engine has stopped for a good while and the symptoms point toward a flooded engine.
