That is why I think all mechanical engineers should have to apprentice as grunt mechanics first. To find out how to design things to be robust, uniform, and to be accessible to repair.

Designers should have to live with ugly, complicated, and insane devices... to know what not to do.

Obsolescence does not need help via planning. Ugly and complicated needs no assistance.
