you probely could but i wouldn't, as i don't think the diff could take it. on the same note with 4.11 's i could roast the tires in front wheel drive with no problem, so i think traction would become a major issue with 4.44's. it's not that bad to convert to 4wd, if its like most older subie's you just need the rear lower suspension, and then you have to mount the center of the drive shaft. i havent gone from fwd to awd, this is just what you have to do in an 80's era to go i'm sure someone more informed will chime in.
