If it's one of your plug coils [you probably know each plug has its own separate high tension coil, like a lot of motorbikes] then when getting the shakes, you will be running on five cylinders.

When it is doing this, you carefully disconnect each plug coil in turn. Disconnecting a good one will make it run worse. If there is no change in the shaking/noise, you have found a bad coil.

Coil breakdown can be intermittent, so don't try this test unless it's showing the symptoms you describe.
