One of the motorcycle boards do something like this:
They post the first post with all the states, then you can post if you are willing to help, and a range, and what you have to offer (tools, trailer, place to sleep, ext.) And your location, and a phone number (usually written somewhat cryptic to ward of spammers)...Then the original poster (or Mods) can update the first post by adding the names to each state.
I definitely think this would be a good ideal for here.
