I would hazard a guess that they must get better mileage since they have less weight and less resistance without the reardrive components spinning behind them. As far as 0 - 60 I would also guess it's a matter of traction. If you could get a launch without wheel spin they should be as fast but most times than not the AWD should get better launch off the line even with their extra weight and drive resistance.

I don't know enough about the differences to guess at the type of transmission they have. I am kind of curious as well
