When I owned my Lightning, the most popular chip used was the DiabloSport Chip:

However, they only make chips for the 5.4L and 4.6L Ford modular V8's. I also think they only offer chips for the '97 and newer Ford cars/trucks...
That being said, besides the tuner that Dayle recommended, I would also suggest Superchips:

They would make a chip for both your dad's '02 Ranger and mom's '89 Bronco.
