Could it be that a US gallon is 84% of a UK or Imperial gallon?- the standard fuel tank holds 70litres which is 18.2 US gallons or 15.4 UK gallons. But then don't US cars tend to be 2WD - my UK spec averages 24-25 mpg all the time over 25,000 miles, which would be just over 20 mpUSg- or do you have US miles that are shorter too? Seems unlikely in the US of Large.....
