Maybe to have less stress on the Auto tranny?? or maybe to make things easier (considering fixing) by dividing the tranny into two, one as a tranny and the other as a differential?? i think the 1977 range rover have a one unit tranny considering the A/T and the differential... so when fixing stuff, there was a difficulty removing them because of their massive weight, so maybe here is the answer to your question
