Assuming the pennies were in contact with the metal, the copper coating acts as a corrosion inhibitor via cathodic protection (dredging up inorganic chem knowledge here), and once the zinc was exposed, it would do the same thing, as would anything with a higher standard reduction potential than the car frame. Not a bad idea, creating a mini battery in the trunk.
