I did not do it myself. I had TomsSvx do it for me. It does require swapping out the rear subframe with one from an AWD. But other than that it isnt anymore work than a standard auto to manual conversion. Tom's shop is in Philly now. If he isnt busy I imagine he could do it in less than about 2 weeks if all the parts are on hand. Mine took about 2 months I believe, but the majority of that time was spend getting the parts. I wanted a 6-speed and they werent easy to come by without paying a fortune. A 5-speed WRX tranny swap would be eaaier to get the parts for, and I have a parts car in Delaware that all the rearend parts could be used from. It's about 1.5 hours from Toms shop.
