Actually he didn't say that. The legacy converter is a smaller diameter, higher stall unit. The legacy flex plate is also a smaller diameter unit. You have to match the flex plate to the torque converter.

The SVX transmission is actually superior to the legacy transmission. There are a couple clutch packs in the legacy transmission that aren't as stout as their counterparts in an SVX transmission. It's just easier to find Subaru transmissions out of other types of Subarus that are in better condition than most SVX transmissions.

I guess your problem is that you are fairly certain you have a broken flex plate? This usually happens when someone forgot to use both guide pins on the bell housing.
