It's been discussed at least once before. I think the consensus is the struts were designed for a trunk with no spoiler (the spoiler being a US add-on). So, while I'm not sure it would break a hand, it certainly shuts with some force if left to just drop.
you could test your struts by taking them loose, one at a time and see if they extend by themselves, etc.
