The fuse protects against
battery current in the event of a short between the lead, or alternator and ground, as could occur in a head on prang. The battery is capable of creating massive heat. An engine fire is a prime cause of serious problems after a collision.
If anyone makes alterations to original equipment, they are open for a claim for insurance being denied. Including a fuse could be a deciding factor, should this become a problem.
