Tom, as someone who has ported cylinder heads for a long time, I know your pain!
I've had stuff removed from my eyes eight times by eye specialists. Twice it was because the cast iron shards had rusted so they had to numb the eye, and drill out the debris plus the surrounding area (to avoid infection). By comparison, aluminum is easy!
I try to use a full face-shield whenever possible these days. Keeps stuff out of your eyebows which otherwise might fall back into your eye later on.
