Re: Where is vin 001?

I need to clear up this misunderstanding, which is entirely my fault. here is the thrust of what I wanted to convey:

In essence, as long as maintenance is done on a regular basis, most of these cars should be reliable for a long time.

At the 10th Anniversary, The oldest cars were about 10 years old and the youngest about four, Regular oil changes, tune ups, and the other major stuff, like timing belts, were being done and the mileages were fairly low.

Fast forward 10 years and now the age has doubled. These cars will need more maintenance in their later years, no matter how well maintained they are, and problems will arise, because of mileage, that were not seen 10 years ago.

MY 96 Polo has had oil changes every 3500 miles since new, using Mobil1, transmission flushes every 25,000 miles etc. and any maintenence it needed, Even with all of my efforts, my head gasket failed at 125,000 miles and my main crankshaft bearings wer just about worn away, Nothing that I did; the oil tolerences were set too tight at the factory. I couldn't have perceived this and done any more than I did, and yet...

Head gaskets fail due to age, not mileage, But this is random (my son's 92 pearlie has a perfect running engine with 234,000 miles and 20 years on it and no HG problems)

How many HG posts did you find here in the early days, compared to now? The very first head dasket post was in September 2006, and there have been 500 posts since then. These cars are beginning to wear out from the top and the bottom.

Maybe I just should have said that these cars are twice as old as they were wheb Lafayette happened and that they are more fragile in many respects.

Sorry about not thinking this through accurately
