I have a "cockpit cover", basically half a car cover that covers just the roof and all of the glass around the car. It attaches at the front with velcro around the windshield wipers, along the sides by elastic around the rear view mirrors and door handles, and fastens inside the trunk channel. I first used it at Lafayette.
Before I got my garage, whenever there was a chance of hail, I put a sheet of 2" foam rubber over the roof and stretched the cockpit cover over it. Hail would just bounce and not cause any damage. You can do this with a normal car cover as well.
The other thing I did that you can do to minimize hood damage is just raise the hood so that the hail cannot make a direct hit and cause a dent; its more of a glancing, ricochet thing. There is nothing in your engine compartment that can be hurt by hail.
