It is possible that even though the voltage seems normal, it may not be getting enough cranking amps.

Removing the alternator does make the job easier but I do not believe it is required. It's been about 4 years since I've done it.

I don't know what you have access to, but if you can get a jack and stands under the rear give that a shot. (hope you have the factory wheel chocks)
