I don't have any experience with the 8500 (or personally know anybody who has one), so I can't really compare the two. The V1 and the Passport 8500 are at the top of every comparision I have seen. The V1 has saved my bacon several times and I really like it. I bought a V1 about 5 years ago. I held onto it for 3 years and sold it for almost what I paid for it on ebay. Then I bought another V1 with the smaller case and upgrade technology. After all transactions were complete, I ended up paying about $50 for the upgrade. Whatever you think of them, they hold their value well.
My biggest complaint was that I couldn't program it to get rid of the x-band. The CHP and Nevada police don't use x-band anymore so it's not doing me any favors when it goes off. Now that they posted how to program it, it will be even better.
I'm not sure of the price of the 8500, but the V1 is pretty expensive. That's the biggest drawback to buying one.
