Thumping in Reverse?

I have a '92 SVX with 80k miles which I have owned since 8/91. Fell in love when I saw it at the '90 NY Auto Show.

Aside from the torque converter and transmission, which were replaced under warranty, I have had no other significant problems with this car.

For quite a while the front end has made thumping noises when going in reverse with the wheels turned all of the way in either direction. It has slowly gotten worse. Now you can feel the front moving around in the same situation. I have always assumed that this was the u-joints wearing out and that I would replace them when they began making noice when going forward. However, there is still no noise going forward and I am wondering if I have a safety problem here.

If it is the u-joints is this a DIY job ( I am a very handy shade tree). If not, what should I expect to pay per side.

TIA, John
