You can get a furnace which is wood burning and has oil back up. When you are not home to fill the furnace with wood, the oil will take over to keep the house warm. The other thing you can do is use 2 woodstoves to better distribute the heat throughout the house.
I have a small (1200sq.ft.) house and my Vermont Castings Resolute Acclaim makes plenty of heat for the whole place. I have a large vent above the woodstove to allow more heat to get upstairs to the bedrooms. If I'm not home for a day or 2, the electric baseboard heaters kick in if the temperature drops low enough.
