Well, I don't know much but one thing is to make sure it has a real sturdy base, or tripod.

Here's one I've seen recommended:

A nice pair of binoculars is also good for casual stargazing, like 7x50 or 7x50.
A pair for 100-200 will suit you nicely and is a lot easier to deal with and decide on then a telescope.

It's what I used strictly years ago when I was into astronomy.

The real fun is finding stuff and just looking and using your imagination.
