I have gathered that the transmission is the Achilles heels of the SVX, so I'll be inquiring about rebuilds, etc. What are other areas to look for?
The trans will last if treated well. Listen for rear bearings roar. Check power steering rack leaks, oil pump leak, main seals leaks, steering pump leak, oil in the air intake.

They do not salt the roads during the winter here in Fairbanks, but the car might not be originally from here, I'll be looking for rust anyway. What are the most rust prone areas?
In Alaska, everything under the car will be caked with dirt and probably soft/rust prone. If all the iron on the front of the engine (alt bracket, crank pulley) is rusted it's likely an out-of-state car.
Carfax will tell where it's from. Mine came up from Georgia in '95.

Asking price for the SVX is $3500, I don't know the mileage, but is that a fair asking price?
Provided it runs well, sure.

Any tips will be appreciated!
If you buy it add an in-line trans cooler. Don't "flush" the trans oil.
